He was stationed at Fort Ord, California with the 7th Division when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. From there he was in many battles in the Pacific including the Battle of Attu in the Aleutian Islands Campaign; the Battle of Kwajalein Atoll in the Marshall Islands during the Eastern Mandates Campaign; the Battle of Leyte where Gen. MacArthur made his historic return during the Southern Philippine Campaign; and the Battle of Okinawa during the Ryukyus Campaign. Citations noted on his discharge papers included a Purple Heart for wounds received at Okinawa; the Combat Infantryman's Badge and the Distinguished Unit Citation (now known as the Presidential Unit Citation) earned at the Battle of Attu with his company; the Philippine Liberation Medal with 2 Bronze Stars; the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with 4 Bronze Stars; the American Defense Service Medal; the Good Conduct Medal; the World War II Victory Medal and the lapel pin issued at the end of the war. |
